Are Banks Open on Good Friday?

By Elyssa Kirkham for GOBankingRates.com

Good Friday takes place this Friday, April 3, marking the death and crucifixion of Jesus Christ ahead of Sunday’s Easter celebration of his resurrection. As a major Christian holiday, many will observe the day by fasting and attending a service. But is Good Friday a public or bank holiday?

Stock Markets Closed for Good Friday

Good Friday is not a federal holiday, so public services like the post office, schools and libraries will mostly remain open on April 3. The stock market will close on Good Friday, however, meaning both Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange will not be trading.

There are also 12 states that recognize Good Friday as a state holiday: Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Tennessee and Texas. Residents of these states might find that some municipal services and businesses, as well as banks, are closed regionally for Good Friday.

Banks Are Open on Good Friday

Even though Good Friday is a holiday in many states, it is not a federal bank holiday, according to the Federal Reserve Bank. While banks typically close on bank holidays, customers can expect that their banks will be open on Good Friday since it does not fall into that category.

With the Federal Reserve Bank remaining open, banks will have the full support of this important financial infrastructure to process payments and transactions. Since banks are able to operate fully, and Good Friday is celebrated by a relatively limited number of customers and bank employees, the majority of banks will remain open for regular hours to serve customers.

Customers who live in a state listed above or who bank with a Christian financial institution should verify hours with their local branches, as those banks or credit unions might choose to close on Good Friday.

GOBankingRates was able to confirm that a number of major banks will be open on Good Friday, including:

  • BBT
  • PNC Bank
  • SunTrust Bank
  • TD Bank
  • Wells Fargo

Other major banks were open on Good Friday 2014, which is a good indication of this year’s service. These included Chase, Citibank, U.S. Bank and Capital One.

Wherever you bank, chances are good the your bank will be open on Good Friday to deposit money, pay bills or take advantage of other services as normal.
